In 1954, bandleader Bill Haley (vocals, guitar; born July 6, 1925, died February 9, 1981) and His Comets recorded "Rock Around the Clock in 1954, a rock anthem that stayed at Number One for eight weeks and sold an estimated 25 million copies worldwide. For most of the 1950s, Haley was a presence on the record charts, and he appeared in several rock and roll movies aimed at teenagers.
