When Matthew Morgan and James Spooner joined forces in 2002, their focus was giving a voice to thousands of multi-cultural kids fiercely identifying with a lifestyle path-less-traveled. Morgan, a visionary with 15 years in the music industry, instinctively understood that the indie rock/punk/hardcore scene had powerful appeal beyond the predictable Caucasian audience; the passion evident in writer-director Spooners hours of riveting hand-shot footage was the indisputable proof. The result: 2003s Afro-Punk, the seminal cult classic film spotlighting Black Punks in America.
Born in Washington D.C. in the fall of 1978, members Paul (H.R.) Hudson (Voice) his brother Earl (Drums), Gary (Dr.Know) Miller (Guitar) and Darryl Jenifer (Bass), came together like the Ninja Turtles, when they were exposed to a suspicious green goo while working at various research centers throughout the Washington Metropolitan area, eventually Bad Brains were banned in D.C.
Black Rock Coalition
The Black Rock Coalition was founded in 1985 by guitarist Vernon Reid,
journalist Greg Tate and producer Konda Mason in reaction to the
constrictions that the commercial music industry places on Black artists.
A collective of artists, writers, producers, publicists, activists and
music fans assembled to maximize exposure and provide resources
for Black artists who defy convention. To date, the BRC is the only
national nonprofit organization dedicated to the complete creative freedom
of Black artists.
Black Women Rock
jessica Care moore founded Black Women Rock! in 2004 at the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. The 90 minute show is a tribute to pioneer rocker, Betty Davis and features some of the most progressive vocalists and women musicians in the country
Fishbone first assembled in 1979 with John Norwood Fisher (bass); his brother Phillip "Fish" Fisher (drums); Angelo Moore, who sometimes uses the stage name "Dr. Madd Vibe" (vocals, saxophones ranging from sopranino to bass, theremin); Kendall Jones (guitar); "Dirty" Walter A. Kibby II (vocals, trumpet); and Christopher Dowd, who sometimes uses the pseudonym "Charlie Down" (keyboards, trombone, vocals). Founding members John Norwood Fisher, Angelo Moore, and Walter Kibby remain with the band as of 2013.
Recording both as Parliament and Funkadelic, George Clinton revolutionized R&B during the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from several late-’60s acid heroes: Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. The Parliament/Funkadelic machine ruled black music during the ’70s, capturing over 40 R&B hit singles (including three number ones) and recording three platinum albums.
Born in Kannapolis, NC, on July 22, 1941, Clinton became interested in doo wop while living in New Jersey during the early ’50s. . Basing his group on Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, Clinton formed The Parliaments in 1955, rehearsing in the back room of a Plainfield barbershop where he straightened hair. The Parliaments released only two singles during the next ten years, but frequent trips to Detroit during the mid-’60s – where Clinton began working as a songwriter and producer – eventually paid off their investment.
PURE HELL- Proto-Punk/Classic-Punk/Rock. "The World's First All Black Punk-Rock Band,” established 1974 in Philadelphia, PA, during the flashpoint of the punk culture in New York City, London and Los Angeles.
Amid the pioneers of the post garage, acid rock, glam-theatre era of the late 60's/early 70's, this band is considered the first of its kind, and comparable to the Sex Pistols, Dead Boys, The Germs, The MC 5 and Bad Brains, who recognize them as an influence.
Vernon Reid is probably best known for leading Living Colour. Vernon founded Living Colour in New York City circa 1985 and piloted the band through a remarkable career. Among the highlights: a double platinum-selling debut album Vivid, released in 1988; its gold-certified successor, Time's Up, released 1990; two consecutive Grammy Awards in the category of Best Hard Rock Performance; opening for the Rolling Stones' 1989 "Steel Wheels" tour; and appearing on the first Lollapalooza tour in the summer of 1991. Vernon is thrilled to be working with Living Colour again and is extremely proud of their new album Collidescope, which was released in October of 2003 on Sanctuary Records.
